South 65th Street Transit Village This 140-acre infill site was recently rezoned to encourage TOD. It is located approximately 4 miles east of downtown Sacramento , and is within ½ mile of California State University at Sacramento and the 65 th Street LRT and bus transit hub. The proposed land use plan promotes residential and commercial mixed-use development to support transit ridership and improve pedestrian circulation and access to light rail. To determine whether the project's trip generation and mode split characteristics would be different from conventional sites, the following sources were reviewed.
Factors tending to reduce vehicle trip generation included the site proximity to LRT and CSUS, whose students exhibit low vehicle ownership and high vehicle occupancy rates, as well as the site plan concepts designed to encourage non-vehicle modes of travel.
To quantify the effects on traffic generation and mode split, observed travel patterns for individuals living and working near Sacramento transit stations were used in conjunction with the 4Ds methodology. The relative density, diversity and design of the site alternatives were compared and translated to reductions in trip generation and trip length. Under the highest density alternative, approximately 9% of vehicle trips would shift to transit. Conclusion: The highest-density alternative generated the largest number of total trips, but the smallest proportion of automobile trips. |
